Ghosts, water goblins, mermaids, portals to Hell, and The Devil appearing at will: All kinds of crazy and often-horrifying tales of Prague and its history. I do wish I had been able to read this book before I left Prague, but at the same time I do remember the places they talk about so well that it's not the end of the world. What a weird and crazy place it is. Fun and melancholic getting my virtual feet back on the ground there for my third novel.
Jan 04, Mel rated it it was amazing Shelves: 19th-century-fiction , czech-lit , spooky , folktale , translation. I bought this book the first day we were in Prague and read it that night. It is fantastic. It's beautiful, with lovely paper and illustrations of the neighborhoods of Prague at the bottom of every page. The stories are divided into sections of the city, and as such reading it gave a great feel for the layout and nature of the different areas of Prague.
As such it works not just as a collection of supernatural tales but also as a guidebook. The stories were a lovely collection of spooky tales, I bought this book the first day we were in Prague and read it that night. The stories were a lovely collection of spooky tales, mostly ghost stories, with added stories about the devil and water spirits from the river.
I really enjoyed all but one of them. They include the tale of the Golem from the Jewish Ghetto, the sacrifice of the builder's wife on Charles' Bridge, flaming skeletons, and ghosts who need putting to rest. When we went to the Ghost and Supernatural Museum the next day I was really pleased to find nearly all the stories I'd read the night before there.
I'd really recommend this to anyone who likes supernatural things and Prague. Mar 26, Callum Soukup-Croy rated it it was amazing Shelves: czech , history , classics.
A pretty fascinating book for anyone who has been to Prague and is familiar with the city or just wants to go and visit. The legends of Prague are a combination of heart-warming, blood-curdling, cheerful and tragic. Whats more, the physical remnants of these legends and the role they played in shaping the history of Prague are dotted throughout the city and if you read this book you might be able to impress your friends, and some locals, with facts you would never find in any normal history book A pretty fascinating book for anyone who has been to Prague and is familiar with the city or just wants to go and visit.

May 23, Winna rated it really liked it. A pretty book: every page is adorned with pictures of praguer buildings and depictions of the characters above every title. Full of love and gold and ghost and ghost and ghost stories.. Gonna bring this book with me next time I re-visit Prague. Aug 22, Stan Georgiana rated it really liked it. Jul 24, Nadima El-khalafawi rated it it was ok. I would give this book 2. Maybe the translation was a bit dull?
I would recommend buying this book if you are going to do some detailed walking tours of Prague. The buildings would appear even more interesting if you knew some of the legends behind them. I would love to find a book of legends that are really well written though! Aug 12, Nicole rated it really liked it. I picked this book up while visiting Prague. I wish I would have found it the first day and made time to read it.
It would have been really cool to find all the places in the book. If you're traveling to Prague this is worth reading. Great hidden gems to find in the city! Pretty good! I love folk stories. The edition has a few typos. Jan 21, Lori rated it really liked it. A beautiful book - I bought it for "theme reading" during travel to Prague. A nice and fun collection. I wish I would have started it earlier on the trip, as each story also lists a location and the locations are listed on the map in each section.
May 03, Winterdragon rated it really liked it Shelves: history , haunted-houses , folk-tales , mythology. Thoroughly recommended for any visitors to Prague with an interest for myths and stories.
Concise yet entertaining re-tellings with illustrations and all. All the places exist in one form or another to this day; there are even maps! Readers also enjoyed.

This is a book about an emperor and a small boy, a husband, a father, a general, a man of learning and a writer. Charles had great talents and was born to high estate, a lucky combination that enabled him to fulfil his courageous visions. His private life too makes a great story, full of dramatic turns of fate and excitement from beginning to end. How did he see the world, as a four-year-old imprisoned by his father in a royal castle? How did he feel as a sixteen-year-old boy entrusted by his father with governing a land whose language he had forgotten? And how great was the joy of the mature monarch when at long last a son and heir to the empire was born to him?
