The S was a member of the third generation of Akai samplers. Improvements over the previous S series include increased memory, increased polyphony, resonant filters, and an improved user interface. The S features 16 bit linear sampling at A maximum of 16meg of memory can be fitted, although the unit can be modified to accept 32meg. The unit has 32 voices of polyphony with a maximum of samples and programs.

The Akai and EMU samplers of this era are the workhorses and have a excellent tone added to the samples that you don't get with software and a computer. I love my Akai and wouldn't trade it for anything. Its kept me going for 12 years and hasn't got a thing wrong with it.
