In Particular the whole of chapter XI and greater part of the appendices have been added. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text.
In Chapter 1. I have not in this chapter attempted to supply arithmetic proofs of the fundamental theorems concerning the existence of limits, but have allowed their truth to rest on an appeal to the readers intuition, in the hope that the discussion may thus be made more attractive to beginners.
An arithmetic treatment will be found in Appendix-I. Rate Product. Flipkart Customer Certified Buyer , Patna 7 months ago. Have doubts regarding this product? Post your question. An Introduction to the Theory of Infinite Series
The Basic Library List Committee suggests that undergraduate mathematics libraries consider this book for acquisition. This is a thorough and still up-to-date introduction to infinite series. The book is slanted towards mathematical physics, though without giving any applications there, and has a lot of material on differential equations, Fourier series, and Bessel functions. The book is especially good at counterexamples, and includes many of these to warn against pitfalls in reasoning and to show that all the hypotheses of the theorems are really needed. About a quarter of the book is in three appendices on background and related material not in the mainstream of the book. Bromwich does not go into as much depth it is more truly an introduction than Knopp, which is more of a reference , but Bromwich does have much harder and more numerous exercises.

This edition consists largely of a reproduction of the first edition which was based on lectures on Elementary Analysis given at Queen's College, Galway, from , with additional theorems and examples. Additional material includes a discussion of the solution of linear differential equations of the second order; a discussion of elliptic function formulae; expanded treatment of asymptomatic series; a discussion of trigonometrical series, including Stokes's transformation and Gibbs's phenomenon; and an expanded Appendix II that includes an account of Napier's invention of logarithms.
