This is not an easy task as the grey world of the Polish People's Republic is not a place for small kids.

There are plenty of allusions and references to the real organizations, people, and events of that time. To be honest, I did not like the story, as it is neither comprehensible for children, nor interesting for parents. Dukaj plays with language a lot, but these language games are too difficult for a kid. Even though a parent may and should, actually read the book together with a child, I think that the reality of these hard times are too complex and ambiguous to explain to children in a clear way.

However, the illustrations are fantastic. I heard that the artistic style of them was compared to Tim Burton's cartoons and for sure there is some resemblance. I admire the way in which he portrayed the dull and gray reality where everyone looks the same and nobody smiles. And those who belongs to the "system" are more like thoughtless, merciless machines and robots rather than human beings.

Aug 26, Piet Michael rated it it was amazing Shelves: polish , child-literature , contemporary. That's the kind of book, mainly for children though, that I would call a page-turner, since it made me who isn't prone to be a quick reader, finish it in 2 days.

Oct 22, Danics rated it really liked it. I was positively surprised by this book. The artwork is amazing and the story is solid, with action from beginning to end, good characters. I recommend this book to people who like fantasy books since this is pretty much a fantasy book.

Oct 14, Jakub rated it it was amazing. I've reread this again. Guess what I must have been tired last time. I found the story much more coherent, had an interesting discussion about the meanings of some bits of it, and in general enjoyed it much much more.

Oh, and the fact that I was reading the actual book, with wonderful illustrations There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Readers also enjoyed. About Jacek Dukaj. Jacek Dukaj. Dukaj studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University.

He is known for the complexity of his books, and it is often said that a single short story of Dukaj contains more ideas than many other writers put into their books in their lifetime. Popular themes in his works include the technological singularity, nanotechnology and virtual reality, and because of this his books often can be classified as hard science fiction.
